4. The Quick Status page

image

The Netsight3 Quick Status page gives an overview of current issues on the different parts of the Janet Network.

Counts of circuits in each region are provided, along with counts of circuits that are down or degraded. In addition Traffic Lights style cards are displayed for each circuit that is degraded or down.

The status of each connection is based on ping (ICMP Echo) percentage packet loss. A percentage packet loss greater than 40% and less than 90% would mark a circuit as degraded (yellow). A percentage packet loss of 90% or greater would mean the circuit is down. Packet loss below 40% and the circuit would be marked as up.

4.1 The Network Status display

image

The Network Status section of the page displays counts of public circuits by region. In addition, where circuits are down, counts are show in red text in a white circle next to the region count. Where circuits are degraded, counts are shown in black text on a yellow circle.

Choosing the name of each region listed will take you through to the appropriate Traffic Lights page for that region. (N.B. In a change to the behaviour of the previous service, you now need to be logged in to see the Traffic Lights pages).

4.2 The Degraded / Down Connections card list

In addition to the regional counts at the top of the page, the Quick Status page also shows Traffic Lights style RAG rated cards for all down and degraded connections.

4.2.1 An important note about Ping polling and the switch to Netsight3

Because Netsight3 is a new service running on different servers to the previous Netsight version, not everyone is accepting our ICMP Echo (ping) polling, and some are shutting off access with firewalls.

This means that circuits which are actually up are being reported as down on Netsight3. This is particularly apparent on the Quick Status and home pages.

If you are affected by this, please contact us help@jisc.ac.uk so that we can resolve this with you.

4.3 Refresh cycles for this page

The Quick Status page has two refresh cycles at play (three if you include the one minute refresh cycles of the underlying polling system).

The behaviour of this page differs slightly to the Traffic Lights pages. For those pages, the data is refreshed when the page is loaded into the browser and the refresh cycle is based upon the time the page was first loaded for you.

4.3.1 Marshalling and aggregation of underlying data

The underlying data for the Quick Status page requires a degree of pre-processing and aggregation and is therefore performed by a process running in the background on a once per minute cycle. A timestamp for when the underlying data was last refreshed is displayed at the top of the page.
